Pages 24-68 Week of 11/8/10

In this section we learn that Clarisse has stopped going to school. Why has she stopped, and do you relate to her reasoning? Why or why not?

The concept of "being alive, but not really living" is a common theme in this novel. Explain why.

What is your take on the woman who not only refused to leave her condemned home, but struck the match herself to light it on fire? Why would she do this? What is she symbolic of in this novel?

Finally, do you agree or disagree with Beatty's take on books on page 62? Explain.

  1. She stopped because school has become more physical than mental. I don't agree because school isn't suppose to be physical.

When you are alive but not really living you aren't really changing anything you just accept the way things are. Guy is just burning the books because people are telling him to not because he really believes in doing it.

I don't believe in what she said. Books have a meaning no matter what. The author usually have a meaning or theme behind their books.

  2. she stopped because she is considered "antisocial" and the other people didn't really like her because she was not talkative.

she is symbolic because shes revolting torwards other burning her stuff, she was tired of seeing people come and go through others houses and burning there books

i dont believe what she says. i think books are important even though there not read as often as they should be. they have an importance. without books, society would worse off as it is already.

  3. she stopped going becasue she was being considered antisocial and noone really liked her there

to me the concept of being alive but not not really living is when you sit there and let all the thinkgs in life pass you by and you dont take advantage of the good times to come

i would consider her senile because of her actions but at the same time she is revolting towards the burning of the books

no i dont belive in what she says about the books because you can learn what you are willing to take from them. thats how we learn these days

  4. She stopped going to school because she wasn't necessarily a people person, and she didn't like to interact with others. I don't really agree with this because school should be a place where you would talk amongst your friends and what-not. As well as learn.

I believe this concept means that you are living, but you're really not doing anything significant with your life. You just let all the exciting things pass you by.

Well, first of all I would think that she is crazy. But, I do respect the fact that she stands for what she believes.

I don't agree with her because all books have a meaning. Whether it be to entertain. inform, etc.

  5. She stoppped going to school because she was considered reclusive and didn't associate herself well with others and i agree with her beacuse she thinks different and isn't like everyone else and questions the way things are.

the concept of being alive but not really living is just like when someone is just going through the motions but not really being aware of what is going on.

I think she took her beliefs to the extreme butt she did stand up for what she belives in.

I disagree with her because you can learn alot from books based on what you taake out of them and apply them to the real world.
